Passion and Compassion

Let's not be hasty or inappropriate with our condemnations of Red Sox Czar Larry Lucchino. Criticism? Absolutely. Calls for corporal punishment and worse? No.

Maybe we could describe his action best by imprinting 'stupid' on each grain of sand in the Sahara Desert. Maybe we could hire a private plane with a banner with the words, "Honk if you disapprove of Larry Lucchino's treatment of Theo Epstein." Maybe we could email RedSox.com by the thousands to express our dissatisfaction with management. Maybe we could boycott Red Sox merchandise for the month of November to demonstrate that disrespecting the fans actually costs something.

What we shouldn't be doing is calling for the death penalty for mismanagement. We shouldn't be preparing our tar and plucking chickens, or contemplating abacination.

The last Sox game I attended, when A-Rod would come up to hit, a fan repeatedly yelled, "hit 'im in the head." That isn't either sporting or clever. Maybe we can wish that Lucchino's wallet be filled with kryptonite, because obviously the Sox President thinks he's Superman. Maybe we could threaten to pour cement into the Boston Common pond, so L-squared can show us how he can walk on water. Maybe we should remember Howard Beale from Network as in "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore."

So, I'd encourage Red Sox fans everywhere to mail Howard Beale's comments to the Nation, "I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE." This one's for you, Larry. Don't forget to tell Mo and Curly.

Bye bye boy wonder. If it wasn't for Tony Clark's double bouncing over the three foot wall in right field -- you would be just another wannabe. You were that lucky. Iguchi wanted to play 2nd base this year in Boston. But you thought lifetime scrub Graffanino was a better fit. You botched the ARod deal beyond belief -- there was never approval from the players' union yet you couldn't resist the publicity. Manny Ramirez unclaimed on waivers? You think the Yankees would let that happen again? Can you blame him for wanting out? Matt Clement? He looked good under pressure -- huh? Pedro Martinez? Why pay the greatest attraction to hit Fenway since The Kid $48 million? His numbers weren't that good anyway. He was the only guy I've ever seen with the courage to buzz the Yankees right back (that "Daddy" stuff was a sandbag). You take all the credit for Ortiz -- but why did you sign Jeremy Giambi if you knew he was that good? You're a fraud, boy wonder. Go back to the Ivy League and don't come back. You're lucky the rightfield corner wall in Fenway isn't four feet high.

I think the disappointing part of this is not seeing Epstein go. He's not the only guy who can do the job. The problem is the way upper management handled the situation. Also, whether this leak to Dan Shaughnessy happened or not, it shows how the owners, or part-owners (i.e. the Globe) promote the team. The old saying "all publicity is good publicity" holds true here.

I think what is shameful is the way that the most passionate fans in the country are abused every year. We will be reading boston.com and redsox.com for updates every day for the next 2 weeks.

Listen, Theo wasn't perfect, but he had the cujones to pull the trigger on a deal that took his team all the way to a sweep of the World Series. Trading Nomar for the players he got in return seemed a laughable move at the time, but it WORKED. He ditched a disgruntled shortstop and got some decent talent and team chemistry in return.

Yeah, there were some clunker deals along the way, but who doesn't make mistakes?

I applaud Theo for taking yet another chance: being true to himself and not the platter of money laid out before him to be Lucchino's whipping boy for another three years.

This certainly isn't the end of the world for Red Sox Nation, but could it be (duh duh duh...)

Here we are in the 21st Century and more and more alien shows keep coming out on television. Perhaps one day the government will finally call it quits and tell us mere mortals that they have captured alien life and doing experiments with them as the aliens supposedly do experiments on us human beings. I mean, at least it would give me the feeling of tables being turned on the aliens. Maybe we can teach those foreign creations about something like Canadian ecommerce host site web and show them a thing or two.
