Trivia (obvious)

There are only two days a year without major professional sports games. Pretty easy, huh?

The Hot Stove League Begins

The Red Sox announced that about 81 percent of existing ticket prices would remain unchanged for the 2007 season. I'm sure that relieves many of our anxieties that tickets could actually get expensive. "America's Most Beloved Ballpark" already had the highest price tag for a family outing of four, currently only requiring a second mortgage, a downgrade to regular from high test, turning the heat down to 60 at night, and buying only generic turkey hot dogs for weeks. If I can find my Game 1 ticket stub from the bleachers in 1975, I think it will show $4.75 for attending a World Series opener. Now that's almost the price for a bottle of water. Well, water is the commodity of the 21st Century, and I'm sure that Mr. Henry will confirm that, although a lot of other commodities haven't treated him so well in the recent past. Of course, that also means that 19 percent of ticket prices will rise. I guess I'd like to sit in the Monster Seats someday, and that...

Surf's Up (W9-2) Season 12-11

Channel surfers' delight as the Sox won (9-2) for the first time in seven games in Texas and the Celtics evened their series at two with the Pacers with a 110-78 blowout. Seven strong innings from 'Then Came' Bronson Arroyo, three hits from Kevin Youkilis (the Talisman is back), and homers from Johnny Damon, Trot Nixon, and Jason Varitek made for a relatively easy win. Mike Timlin and Keith Foulke closed out the win. Foulke had his command back and his fastball was in the 88 range, up from the mid 80s. Arroyo held the powerful Rangers to 5 hits and a walk while recording five strikeouts. Former Sox fill-in Pedro Astacio got touched up for the loss, as after three decent starts he has reverted to his struggling form over the past couple. Unfortunately for the Sox, the Yankees and Orioles both won, and the Orioles moved to 16-7, behind a game tying homer from Miguel Tejada and another shot from Brian Roberts. Texas Trip Notes. Terry Francona sat out his second game of the Tam...

Truer Words

"David Wells was hired to win this game." I think Mike Lupica owns this one, but it might be John Dennis. Whoever, whenever, they were right. Wells, the mercurial lefty (redundancy) came through beating The Team That Must Never Be Named in the ballpark that he'd like to blow up. Mike Timlin celenrated winning the 10th Player car with a vital save, while the 'LayDown Dogs White Sox' are tied with the Tribe 1-1 in extra innings. Gerry Moses is on the post-game show with Bob Lobel, and Gerry is a nice man. I met him a few years back and asked about Yazoo, MS. He said, "how do you know I'm from Yazoo?" I replied, "Red Sox fans know these things." Sweating the small things won tonight's game, from stolen bases by Johnny Damon, to pretty good defense, strategic relief by the bad-mouthed (by me as much as anyone) bullpen, but mostly Mr. Wells winning number 15 and ringing the cash register. Wells is now tied for 7th in the league in wins, one ...
